One of the joys of early winter is the taste of fresh pecan nuts…<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A neighbour\u2019s pecan tree
\nHangs over the garden wall,
\nAnd each year I gather the nuts,
\nThat in my garden fall.
\nBut they\u2019re not all for me,
\nThat harvest hanging there,
\nAs with the local hornbills,
\nThe crop I always share;
\nAnd they do have an advantage,
\nThose hornbills, over me,
\nBeing able to reach the pecans
\nStill hanging on the tree.
\nSo while I patiently wait
\nFor my pecan nuts to drop,
\nMy clever feathered friends
\nAre able to browse and to shop.<\/p>\n

Some years there’s not so many,
\nIf the pecan crop is small,
\nThen my black and white visitors
\nLeave so very few to fall.
\nBut I don’t mind about that,
\nAs their needs are more than mine,
\nAnd the few they always leave behind
\nWill simply suit me fine.
\nBut this year was a bumper crop,
\nPecan nuts are everywhere,
\nAnd so there have been plenty
\nFor the birds and I to share.
\nPecan butter, candied pecans,
\nWhat a treat I’ve got in store,
\nFreshly made from the pecan nuts,
\nFrom my neighbour\u2019s tree next door.<\/p>\n
